Community:
To Community Smallwood, it is community defined in biological terms which makes up the core of our purpose and unifies us: “a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment”. The responsibility we have to strengthen our community is one that Community Smallwood pursues with constancy of purpose. There are many concentric circles of our community:
• Employees – It is our goal to provide full-time, living wage jobs in which our employees have opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Locale – The people of Wallowa County have been historically dependant on natural resources and have thereby developed a deep appreciation and respect for the land. We strive to create market driven opportunities to enhance the health of these lands, thereby helping sustain the ability of these lands to provide for the needs of its inhabitants.
• Eco-region – Community Smallwood operates in a landscape characterized by dry, frequent fire forests, sensitive grasslands and culturally important spawning grounds and wildlife habitat. It is imperative that our business helps create an economy that is no longer based solely on extraction of natural resources, but rather on the restoration of this landscape so that it can continue to provide clean water, clean air and healthy habitat.
• Nation – We believe that developing and producing domestic manufacturing jobs and products is highly important to the strength of our Country’s economy. Furthermore, we believe that manufacturing high quality products while lowering costs is a necessity for domestic manufacturing to succeed. Community Smallwood is dedicated to achieving these goals by reducing waste and transportation needs and through continuous improvement throughout our systems.
• Environment – Community Smallwood has a unique and exciting opportunity: reducing Carbon emissions and increase local, renewable energy production simultaneously. Utilizing woody biomass that is removed during restorative, fuel reduction projects helps reduce wildfire risk and promote forest growing conditions; thereby reducing smoke emissions and increasing carbon uptake. Meanwhile, by creating thermal energy products from the woody biomass, we help reduce fossil fuel consumption locally.
